This page is for introducing some of the lovely PEPC members who stock our shop, and for offering a glimpse of south west smallholder life: a sort of rural idyll with lashings of mud and muck for good measure. For more photos from our 2014 producer visits, check out our page on flickr.

Tamarisk Farm

If you don't use chemicals and you do let the animals live side by side then that preserves the lovely area. One of the reasons it's a lovely area is that we've been working to conserve it.

Tamarisk Farm, a multigenerational family farm overlooking the sea in West Bexington on Dorset's Heritage Coast, has been growing organically since before the Soil Association established their standards, employing conservation agriculture since well before that term was coined, and it continues to develop in suitably organic fashion. Josephine and Arthur Pearse reclaimed the market garden here in 1960 when they moved to the area to raise their family. The meat and flour businesses developed with their daughter Ellen's return to the farm with her husband Adam and their children in 1984. Rebecca Laughton, who worked at Tamarisk while developing her book Surviving and Thriving on the Landcame back in 2013 to grow veg here as well, with a focus on providing for area caterers.

You can read more about Tamarisk Farm's motivations for conservation, book a farm cottage holiday or enjoy past issues of the Tamarisk newsletter on their website.

This is the way of life I love; I was going to do it whatever it took.

That doesn't mean it's been easy.
However, it turned out very well!

Summer 2014 marked Pat Bowcock's 15th anniversary at Ourganics, her 'Permaculture demonstration way of life and debt-free business' just outside the village of Litton Cheney. Over the years Ourganics has become a pilgrimage site and a place of inspiration for many, and with 1500 visitors annually her good influence continues to grow.

Pat developed Ourganics using Permaculture principles and ethics, and relied upon her prior knowledge of the site, the power of her convictions and her capacity for hard graft more than any practical understanding of what lay ahead. Pat continues to learn as she goes along, with help from the many volunteers who have shared their time, knowledge and skills. And the Universe, as they say, has provided.

Reflecting on the experience of creating Ourganics, Pat says, "I've learnt an appreciation for simple basic systems. I can't now imagine living any other way or doing anything else."
